Kansas Wife Sentenced for Murdering Army Soldier Husband at Military Base Residence

During the month of February in the year 2024, a federal jury in Kansas found a woman guilty of shooting and killing her husband, who was serving in the Army, at their residence located at Fort Riley.

Margaret E. Shafe, age 31, was found guilty of murder in the second degree on Friday, according to officials with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas.

She was found guilty of shooting and killing her husband, Army Spc. Greg Shafe, who was a soldier assigned to Fort Riley, a military installation in Kansas.

The obituary for Shafe states that he passed away as a result of a gunshot wound to the head that he received on February 19, 2024, when he was stationed at the facility.

Following the following day, he was proclaimed deceased. When Shafe’s wife was forced to be hospitalized owing to issues with her pregnancy, he was about to embark on a deployment to Poland with his newly formed wing of the military.

“Greg stayed at Margaret’s side while she was hospitalized in Kansas City for the remainder of her pregnancy and Sydona’s stay in NICU,” according to the obituary. “Greg loved his family very much and Sydona was Greg’s pride and joy. She was truly a daddy’s girl.”

In the obituary, it is stated that Shafe resided on the base with his stepdaughter, his daughter who was one year old, and his wife Margaret.

In addition, a family friend named Abby Shelton established a GoFundMe campaign in order to provide financial assistance to his Shafe’s daughters.

“This is the worst type of tragedy. Greg was a beacon of light in such a dark world. We are all heartbroken, and praying endlessly for Greg’s family and loved ones,” according to the GoFundMe’s post.

The younger child of Greg Shafe is going to be adopted by one of his relatives, according to Shelton, while his stepdaughter, who is nine years old, will continue to live with her original father.

It is possible that Margaret Shafe might be sentenced to a maximum of life in prison. The circumstances that led to the shooting and the motivation behind it were not immediately revealed.

According to the officials, the investigation into the matter was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Investigation Division of the United States Department of Army, and the Fort Riley Directorate of Emergency Services.
