New Jersey Resident Faces Dui and Reckless Driving Charges After 128 MPH Chase

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (KHN) – A New Jersey guy is now in arrest after driving at high speeds while under the influence in West Haven.

According to Connecticut State Police, officers stopped an automobile on I-95 northbound in West Haven around 3:14 a.m. after noticing erratic driving.

While police were pursuing the vehicle, it was traveling at a speed of 128 mph in a 55 mph zone.

When the driver came to a stop near Exit 43, authorities identified him as Venugopal Puppala, a 25-year-old New Jersey resident.

Puppala said investigators he was driving at that pace to pick up a buddy from a New Haven nightclub, and they were waiting for him to come.

After speaking with Puppala, troopers noticed an odor that appeared to be the result of alcohol consumption, as well as his bloodshot and watery eyes.

Troopers were concerned that he was under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, so they requested him to do the standardized field sobriety tests, which he agreed to but did not complete properly.

Puppala was brought into custody and faces the following charges:

  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Reckless

He was freed on a $1,000 bond and scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on March 11.
