3 Dead, 2 Injured After Boat Sinks Near New York’s Rockaway Peninsula; Coast Guard Continues Search for Missing Passenger

NEW YORK (KHN) – A boat sank in New York, killing three passengers and injuring two more, prompting the United States Coast Guard to seek for a missing person.

One of the hospitalized passengers was in critical condition Monday morning, according to authorities, a day after the boat took on water 5 miles (8 kilometers) southeast of Breezy Point, a community on Queens’ Rockaway peninsula.

The other victim was in stable condition.

“The Coast Guard is still looking for the missing person,” Sydney Phoenix, a Coast Guard spokesperson, told The Associated Press in an email Monday morning. “We currently have an aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City and the Coast Guard Cutter Chadwick” in the immediate vicinity.

On Sunday, Coast Guard rescue units responded to aid the boaters. The search included the New York police and fire agencies, the New Jersey State Police, and the Sandy Hook Pilots.
