KHN – Three individuals were killed and two gravely injured in the aftermath of a two-vehicle incident in Livingston County, Michigan, on Wednesday, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 95, east of Highland Road in Howell Township. All eastbound lanes were closed at Fowlerville Exit 129, while all westbound lanes were closed at M-59 Exit 133, according to Michigan Department of Transportation traffic data.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, a 2010 BMW 5281 was westbound on I-96 when it exited the lanes, hit the grass median, and then drove into the eastbound lanes, colliding with a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer.

A 54-year-old man from Sterling Heights drove the BMW. He was pronounced deceased at Sparrow Hospital.

The Mountaineer driver, a 68-year-old man from Fowlerville, was pronounced dead at the site. One of his passengers, a 91-year-old Howell woman, was also pronounced dead at the scene. The other two passengers, a 69-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman from Fowlerville were transported to the University of Michigan Hospital and were reported to be in critical condition.

According to MDOT reports, the eastbound part of the roadway was blocked for roughly four hours to conduct preliminary accident investigations and cleanup.

Michigan State Police, Fowlerville Police, Howell Area Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS all assisted on the incident.
