Louisville’s Fall Weather Outlook Will Temperatures Rise or Dip

By the time fall officially begins on September 22, the Louisville area may be free of the heat and humidity from yet another warm summer, though not all forecasts indicate a break from above-normal temperatures.

According to an outlook released by The Old Farmer’s Almanac on July 11, temperatures in the Ohio Valley region, which includes Louisville, are predicted to be below average this fall.

The cooler temperatures may cause the red, orange, brown, and yellow leaves that are typical of fall foliage to appear in Louisville earlier than usual this year, in addition to the possible return of jackets and jeans.

Forecasters for the Farmers Almanac predicted that “September and October will be cooler and drier than normal across the (Ohio Valley) region,”

Forecasters predict “warm periods with scattered showers” in the early part of September. By the middle of September, Louisville might experience a cooling trend.

According to the Almanac, October temperatures in the Ohio Valley could be as low as 56 degrees, which is two degrees below average. It could be a “mix of showers and sunshine with shifting temps — warm early, cooling mid-month, then slightly warmer to end.”

But don’t grab the carving knife for the pumpkin just yet. August through October temperatures in Kentucky and the majority of the nation are above average, according to data from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.

In a July 10 update, NWS climatologists said the likelihood of La Niña conditions, which are characterized by warmer-than-normal temperatures in the South and cooler temperatures in the northern states, is increasing in the fall and winter.

According to data from the Louisville National Weather Service, average monthly temperatures in September, October, and November of 2024 were at least 3 degrees warmer than normal for residents of Louisville. With an average temperature of 53.6 degrees in November, it was more than 5 degrees warmer than usual.
