Cobb County, GA — A family-owned construction business in Cobb County is reeling after a thief stole more than $120,000 worth of heavy equipment from their property — but thanks to a GPS tracker, the owner managed to locate it nearly 150 miles away.
The theft took place early Sunday morning at AEM Construction and Restoration, when a suspect broke into the company’s secured yard and took off with a skidsteer and a trailer, both critical to the company’s daily operations.
Security Footage Captures the Theft
Security cameras at the business captured the suspect entering the property by cutting a lock off the fence, then hauling away the stolen equipment.
“We’re really concerned,” said Jennell Martinez, owner of AEM Construction. “A skidsteer and the trailer that we drive around with — we basically use that for our hardscape.”
According to Yahoo News, the footage shows the suspect arriving in a vehicle, surveying the area, and using pliers to cut through the gate. Despite warning signs that the area was under surveillance, the thief appeared undeterred.
“We all have put in a lot of work to get to where we are at today,” Martinez told Channel 2’s Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell.
Financial Impact on the Family Business
Martinez explained that the stolen equipment, valued at over $120,000, was still under financing, meaning her family is responsible for the ongoing payments even after the theft.
“It’s heartbreaking — not just the loss itself, but the fact that this is what we depend on to keep the business running,” she said.
The loss temporarily halted several of AEM Construction’s projects, as the skidsteer is essential for moving heavy materials, grading land, and completing landscaping and restoration work.
Equipment Recovered 150 Miles Away
In an unexpected turn, Martinez was able to track down the stolen machinery using a built-in GPS device.
Late Wednesday night, she confirmed that she located the equipment at a tow yard in Thomson, Georgia — roughly 150 miles from Cobb County. She immediately contacted police, who helped recover it safely.
“We were just relieved,” Martinez said. “I didn’t think we’d ever see it again.”
Investigation Underway
Cobb County Police confirmed they are actively investigating the theft, though they have not released a description of the suspect, who was seen wearing a face covering in the security footage.
Authorities are reviewing the surveillance video and coordinating with law enforcement agencies across Georgia to track the suspect’s movements and determine whether the theft is linked to a larger equipment theft ring.
Growing Trend of Equipment Theft
Experts say construction equipment theft has been on the rise nationwide, often targeting small family-owned businesses that rely heavily on financed machinery.
Police advise business owners to take added precautions such as:
- Installing GPS tracking devices on all major equipment.
- Using reinforced locks and motion-detection lighting.
- Keeping equipment stored indoors or fenced securely when possible.
- Registering all serial numbers with local law enforcement databases.
Despite the successful recovery, Martinez says the experience has shaken her trust and sense of safety.
“We’re thankful we got it back,” she said, “but it’s scary to think someone can just take what you’ve worked so hard for.”
The suspect remains at large as the investigation continues.
