Recently released body camera footage from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reveals a tense encounter between a deputy and a murder suspect, Mark Jorge Gambill, who was discovered hiding in a closet within the same residence where the crime took place. The incident unfolded in late December in an unincorporated area near Corona, California.
The footage, made public on Tuesday, shows the deputy issuing a warning, “Don’t (expletive) move!” before firing multiple shots. However, crucially, the video does not capture Gambill’s actions leading up to the shooting, leaving questions about the circumstances surrounding the use of force. Sheriff Chad Bianco, narrating the video summary, did not offer explanations for why Gambill wasn’t located earlier or provide details on the deputy’s decision to open fire.
The chain of events began with reports of a shooting around 2:15 a.m. on December 28th in the neighborhood of the 13400 block of Barker Lane. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a deceased man outside his residence, prompting an investigation. Subsequently, authorities received information suggesting Gambill might be hiding inside the residence, prompting a search of the premises.
In the released footage, timestamped around noon of the same day, deputies can be seen discovering Gambill concealed in a bedroom closet. With one deputy holding him at gunpoint, others instruct Gambill not to move while preparing to exit the room. However, moments later, one or more deputies discharge what sounds like three shots.
Despite the intense confrontation, no deputies sustained injuries, and Gambill was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was subsequently charged with murder and resisting arrest on January 3rd, and he is currently held on $2 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
