Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has voiced his support for proposed legislation aimed at addressing homelessness by creating designated areas within cities for unhoused individuals to reside. The bills, if enacted, would prohibit local governments from permitting unhoused people to sleep on public property, except in designated areas that meet specific criteria to ensure public safety and well-being.
Under the proposed legislation, these designated zones would be required to provide essential amenities such as restrooms, running water, security, and access to mental health services. Additionally, the use of drugs and alcohol would be prohibited within these areas.
Governor DeSantis, speaking in Miami Beach, emphasized that while the bills are still a “work in progress,” he is committed to moving unhoused individuals off the streets and providing local governments with the necessary funding to house and treat individuals in need. His endorsement of the legislation reflects a proactive approach to addressing the complex issue of homelessness in Florida.
Ron Book, chairperson of the board of the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, lauded the proposed legislation as a positive step forward. However, he noted that Miami-Dade County would not tolerate mass encampments, emphasizing the importance of finding humane and effective solutions to support unhoused individuals.
The push for legislation to address homelessness comes in the wake of recent controversies surrounding the treatment of unhoused individuals in cities like Miami and Miami Beach. Miami faced criticism over a proposed plan to relocate unhoused people to tiny homes on Virginia Key, which was ultimately scrapped due to backlash. Meanwhile, Miami Beach implemented laws allowing police to arrest unhoused individuals sleeping in public who refuse placement in shelters, while Miami has banned public camping altogether.
The proposed bills signal a shift towards a more comprehensive and compassionate approach to addressing homelessness in Florida. By prioritizing the creation of designated areas with essential services and support systems, the legislation aims to provide unhoused individuals with the resources they need to regain stability and dignity.
