A Minnesota woman, Jennifer Nichole Baechle, has been charged in connection with the death of a newborn baby girl, whose body was found floating in the Mississippi River over a decade ago.
The baby, who had been dubbed “Baby Angel,” was discovered in September 2011, seven miles south of Winona, Minnesota, in a bag adorned with incense, a pendant, and several angel figurines. DNA evidence now links Baechle, 43, as the mother of the infant.
Discovery of Baby Angel
The baby’s body was found by boaters during the Labor Day weekend in 2011. One of the boaters attempted CPR on the child, but it was clear she had already passed away.
The figurines surrounding the baby led authorities to give her the nickname “Baby Angel.” Investigators believed the infant was only a few days old when her body was discovered.
Autopsy and Initial Investigation
A medical examiner’s report revealed that the child had a four-inch section of her umbilical cord still attached and several fractures on her skull.
These fractures were believed to have occurred while the baby was still alive, which raised suspicions of foul play.
Despite an extensive investigation, authorities could not identify the baby’s parents or the circumstances surrounding her death for several years.
Breakthrough in the Case
In May 2023, a breakthrough in DNA technology led investigators to Baechle. The authorities had been using DNA samples from the infant’s body to search for potential relatives.
This ultimately led them to Baechle, who was arrested and charged in connection with the cold case.
The case remains under investigation as authorities work to uncover more details about the circumstances that led to the child’s death and her abandonment in the river.
