On Tuesday, U.S. Capitol Police said that they had taken into custody a suspect in the assault of Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C.
James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois, is the suspect who is accused of attacking a public servant.
She was “physically accosted at the Capitol tonight” by someone who she said was a supporter of transgender rights, Maces said Tuesday night on X.
“One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it ll heal just fine,” Mace stated, adding that “violence and threats on my life will only make me double down.”
Capitol Police, who were contacted for comment, did not respond to inquiries about the suspect’s background or if they supported transgender rights.
Police stated they had located the culprit after receiving a report from a House member’s office about an incident that occurred in the Rayburn House Office Building.
According to the statement, McIntyre was screened prior to entering the building, which was accessible to the general public at the time of the event.
A bill to prohibit MPs and House staff from “using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex” was filed by Mace last month. She claimed to be reacting to Sarah McBrides’ election in November as the first openly transgender member of Congress.
Opponents of Mace’s legislation demonstrated outside a House office building last week.
