Newly released body camera footage has unveiled a tense encounter in Riverside County, where a sheriff’s deputy shot a murder suspect discovered hiding in a closet. The suspect, 23-year-old Mark Jorge Gambill of Corona, was located more than nine hours after deputies first responded to the home where he is accused of committing the murder in late December.
The incident unfolded in an unincorporated area near Corona, following reports of a shooting on December 28 in the 13400 block of Barker Lane. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a man fatally wounded outside his residence. As Sheriff Chad Bianco narrates in the video summary of the incident, deputies then learned that the suspect, Gambill, might be hiding inside the same residence.
Body camera footage from around noon on that day captures the moment deputies locate Gambill concealed in a bedroom closet. One deputy can be seen holding Gambill at gunpoint while instructing him not to move, as others prepare to exit the room. However, moments later, one or more deputies are heard firing multiple shots, although the exact circumstances leading to the discharge of firearms remain unclear.
Following the incident, Gambill was charged with murder and resisting arrest on January 3. He is currently detained at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, with bail set at $2 million.
The shooting is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and the county’s multi-department Force Investigation Detail. However, Sheriff Bianco did not provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the reasons behind the deputy’s use of force.
