In a major development for America’s public retirees, millions of Social Security beneficiaries will start receiving larger monthly checks beginning this April.
This follows the implementation of the Social Security Fairness Act, which was signed into law in January 2025.
The new law repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These two long-standing rules had caused a lot of frustration among public employees because they reduced or even completely denied Social Security benefits if the individual also received a government pension.
The repeal is seen as a significant win for many groups of retired workers, including teachers, firefighters, postal workers, and law enforcement officers.
For years, these groups fought to restore their access to the full Social Security benefits they earned during their careers.
With this law, they will now receive the full monthly benefits they are entitled to, with some people seeing increases of over $1,000 a month. The exact increase will depend on individual pension levels and past contributions.

The new benefit payments will follow the regular monthly schedule set by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
If your birthdate falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, your payment will be made on April 9. If it’s between the 11th and 20th, you will receive your payment on April 16. Those with birthdates after the 20th will get their payment on April 23.
For those who have already updated their banking information and address with the SSA, no further action is needed.
However, if you wish to confirm your payment status, you can either log in or create an account on the SSA website at www.ssa.gov, or call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance.
Beneficiaries will also receive official notices in the mail, which will explain the changes to their monthly payments. The SSA aims to complete all record updates by November 2025, although some cases may take longer if they require manual processing.
If you’re not sure whether you have ever applied for retirement, spousal, or survivor benefits because of pension restrictions, the SSA recommends visiting www.ssa.gov. It’s important to note that survivor benefits must be applied for by phone.
