Kangaroo Causes Major Collision and Disrupts Traffic on Alabama Highway

A kangaroo caused a traffic disruption on an Alabama highway on Tuesday, leading to a two-vehicle collision and the temporary closure of the road as authorities worked to capture the animal.

The incident occurred on Interstate 85 in Macon County, located between Tuskegee and Auburn, just before noon, as reported by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

Macon County Sheriff André Brunson streamed the response live, mentioning that the kangaroo’s caretaker had tranquilized it and was preparing for a second shot. “I didn’t believe it,”

Brunson said in the livestream. “Nobody believed it. But I’m looking at him… A kangaroo, fellas, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Macon County. We see a little bit of everything here.”

The kangaroo was eventually captured and placed in an SUV, according to Brunson’s livestream. News outlet al.com, citing Brunson, stated that the kangaroo belonged to a petting zoo in nearby Lee County.

Sheriff Brunson commended the dispatchers for their coordination during the situation, saying, “Y’all did a great job,” after the successful capture.

No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Social media footage taken before the kangaroo was captured showed it hopping across the highway at high speeds.

Assistance in capturing the kangaroo came from Alabama Highway Patrol Division troopers, Macon County sheriff’s deputies, and a conservation enforcement officer, ALEA and Brunson noted.

ALEA confirmed that the animal had been safely recovered and the highway was reopened. The kangaroo was unharmed in the crash.
