NC General Assembly to vote on immigration bill veto overrides

Governor Josh Stein rejected two immigration legislation last month, and the North Carolina General Assembly is scheduled to vote on a veto override this week.

In order to provide Immigration and Customs Enforcement more time to hold illegal individuals who have been detained, House Bill 318 would mandate that sheriffs retain them for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. Additionally, sheriffs must provide ICE at least two hours’ notice before releasing undocumented prisoners.

According to Senate Bill 153, all state law enforcement organizations would have to work with ICE. Additionally, it forbids undocumented immigrants from obtaining several state-provided benefits.

These veto overrides could be prevented because Republicans still have a supermajority in the North Carolina Senate but not in the North Carolina House. Nonetheless, Rep. Carla Cunningham, a Democrat in the House, supported House Bill 318. Her vote this time is uncertain.

Advocates have been making an effort to influence her. Carolina Migrant Network’s policy coordinator is America Juarez-Maldonado. This weekend, she organized volunteers to knock on doors in the north Charlotte neighborhood of Cunningham’s.

We still have the ability to stop legislation in North Carolina that would seriously harm communities,” Juarez-Maldonado stated. Therefore, it’s crucial to even demonstrate our alignment with the amount of authority that remains in North Carolina.

The Carolina Migrant Network is hoping that voters will convince Cunningham to oppose both bills.
