US Sen. Blumenthal proposes federal housing bill to add 3 million homes nationwide

The goal of a recently proposed federal housing plan is to build millions of new homes around the country.

Tuesday morning saw the announcement of the American Housing and Economic Mobility Act, which Connecticut Democrat U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal co-sponsored.

The bill is an expanded version of one that was offered last year with the same name.

Blumenthal wants Republicans in Congress to act on their promises to lower housing costs. “The bill is an opportunity for Republicans to do that,” he said.

According to Blumenthal, that accomplishment—3 million additional homes and a 10% decrease in rental prices—would be enormous for American families. It would transform American housing, or at the very least, be a very good first step in that direction.

The law would provide first-time homeowner help, reduce rent for many, and modify housing programs for veterans.

Additionally, the revised measure would provide incentives for government officials to relax certain land use regulations.

In light of the housing crisis, we want to offer hope because there is basis for optimism, Blumenthal stated. The problem is solvable. America must make the commitment necessary to achieve this.

Blumenthal claimed to be clear-eyed but unconfident in the bill’s chances of passing.

According to him, the programs included in the plan would need funds that were previously allotted and taken from other federal departments if the proposed tax cuts were to pass.

According to Blumenthal, the American Housing and Economic Mobility Act would use funds from tax cuts that would not be implemented.

Kara Capone, CEO of Community Housing Partners, a nonprofit organization, said the bill’s zoning change is a significant step when she was outside Hartford’s Beaumont Lofts, an affordable housing complex.

It’s been really challenging to attempt to create lovely, smaller-scale locations like this in Connecticut that blend in with their communities, Capone added. The solution to homelessness is housing. People aren’t being displaced by it, for sure. It doesn’t make it illegal. In actuality, it provides a place for individuals to remain.
