Bernie Sanders’ Fighting Oligarchy tour has taken him from Missoula, Montana to Shreveport, Louisiana, across the nation.
As part of a campaign against what he perceives to be the growing menace of oligarchy in American politics, he will visit Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville on Sunday, August 10. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m., Sylvan Esso will perform at 5 p.m., and the speakers will begin at 6 p.m.
The former presidential candidate and senator from Vermont has drawn record crowds since beginning the tour in February.
Similar themes to the No Kings protests that have surfaced in Western North Carolina in recent months have been covered at his rallies. Along with the massive cuts to federal programs and agencies like USAID, the Department of Education, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Sanders has denounced the Trump Administration’s increase in presidential power.
We are living in a moment of great danger, Sanders said at a rally in Los Angeles that gathered 36,000 people, alluding to the policies and power expansion of the Trump administration.
“I’m no longer talking about how we’re moving to oligarchy,” he stated. “I’m talking about how we are living today in an oligarchic form of society.”
Sanders has been joined on some of the tour’s stops by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York. She may or may not go to the Asheville rally.
During his 2019 presidential campaign, Sanders made his most recent trip to Asheville. debuted in the River Arts District at the now-closed Salvage Station. He advocated for a single-payer health care system, a tiered corporate tax structure, and free tuition for public institutions and universities at the protest.
