A deadly head-on crash on FM 933, just north of Whitney in Hill County, Texas, has left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The accident took place on Wednesday morning, June 5, around 6:15 a.m. It happened just a few miles outside the city of Whitney, which is located between Hillsboro and Waco. Authorities say that the crash involved two vehicles traveling in opposite directions on FM 933.
According to the initial DPS investigation, a 2017 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound on FM 933 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed into the northbound lane. That’s when it collided head-on with a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado that was going north.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla, identified as 41-year-old Jacob Harms from Whitney, was pronounced dead at the scene by Hill County Justice of the Peace. His body was later taken to a local funeral home in the area. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was identified as a 34-year-old man from Cleburne. He survived the collision but suffered serious injuries. Emergency services rushed him to Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro for treatment.
As of now, there is no official update on his condition, but sources say he was in stable condition after receiving medical care.
Troopers and investigators from DPS were at the scene for several hours, examining the wreckage and taking necessary measurements. Traffic on FM 933 was blocked for a while, and drivers were asked to take alternate routes.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities are checking factors like road conditions, vehicle speeds, possible distractions, and whether alcohol or drugs may have been involved.
So far, no charges have been filed, and no further details have been shared about the events leading up to the crash.
People in the local community of Whitney have expressed shock and sadness over the news. Jacob Harms was known to some as a friendly person and a long-time resident of the area. His death has come as a big loss for his family, friends, and neighbors.
Some locals have also raised concerns over the safety of FM 933, saying that the road sees frequent traffic and can be dangerous, especially during early morning hours.
This tragedy is another reminder of how important it is to drive carefully and follow traffic safety rules. Texas DPS continues to urge drivers to stay alert, wear seatbelts, avoid distractions like mobile phones, and never cross into oncoming lanes unless it’s safe and legal to do so.
The Department of Public Safety has not released further details yet, but the investigation is ongoing. Authorities will likely share more updates once they finish examining the crash data and any witness reports.
In the meantime, they ask anyone who may have seen the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward and contact the Hill County DPS Office.
This incident adds to the growing number of fatal accidents in Texas this year. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), head-on collisions are among the deadliest types of crashes on rural highways. They often happen at high speeds and leave little time for drivers to react.
FM 933, like many other rural roads, doesn’t have a center divider or barrier, which increases the risk of these kinds of accidents. Officials from TxDOT have said that they are working on improving road safety in high-risk areas across the state, but many changes take time, planning, and funding.
As the community of Whitney mourns the loss of one of its own, road safety experts continue to call for more awareness and better driving practices. Even one moment of distraction or a small mistake on a narrow highway can change lives forever.
