The Apogaea festival, a popular Colorado event inspired by Burning Man, was suddenly shut down on Friday after reports surfaced that someone had been given fentanyl without their consent. This incident took place during the multi-day arts and music gathering in Bailey, Colorado.
The Park County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the festival was stopped because of the drug-related incident.
They’re now investigating what exactly happened and who might be responsible. According to law enforcement, the person who was allegedly dosed with fentanyl did not agree to take the drug.
Apogaea’s organizers made the call to suspend the event to keep people safe. In an official post, they said they had to act quickly because of what they called “nonconsensual fentanyl dosing,” which could put many lives at risk. The organizers also said they are working with authorities to get more details and ensure everyone’s safety.
Fentanyl is a strong and dangerous synthetic opioid. Even a small amount can be deadly, especially if someone doesn’t know they’re taking it. That’s why this kind of incident is taken so seriously.
Many attendees were surprised and disappointed by the sudden cancellation, but most understood the seriousness of the situation. People were asked to pack up and leave the site earlier than expected.
As of now, officials haven’t shared any names or confirmed whether anyone has been arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and more updates are expected soon.
Apogaea has been held for years as a smaller, community-driven version of the original Burning Man festival. It’s known for its focus on creativity, art, music, and freedom of expression. This year’s event was supposed to go on through the weekend.
The festival’s organizers said they hope to return next year, but only if they can do so safely and respectfully for everyone involved.
