Austin Tice s mom says discovery of another missing American in Syria feels like rehearsal

On NBC News Meet the Press, Debra Tice stated that she is aware her son Austin, who was arrested in Syria in 2012, is still alive.

“The discovery of American citizen Travis Timmerman in Syria last was almost like having a rehearsal… of what it’s going to really feel like when Austin walks free,” Tice said on Meet the Press on Sunday. She explained the volume of congratulations that were sent to the family that day by people who thought Timmerman was Austin Tice.

While covering Syria’s civil turmoil in 2012, Austin Tice vanished from sight.

Thousands of inmates have been released since the overthrow of the Assad administration, but it is still unknown where Tice was detained and if he has been released. As recently as July 2022, a former inmate informed NBC News that he had been held captive in a cell across the hall from Tice for the past few weeks.

The anguish endured by Tice’s family last month was attributed to Assad by the new leadership of Syria’s opposition government. According to a government official, efforts to find Tice have been unsuccessful thus far.

Debra Tice stated that although her son has not yet been discovered, she is still optimistic that he will be and that her family is as happy as the Timmerman family.

Schumer urges for drone detection system for New York and New Jersey

After a number of drones were sighted in recent weeks, even causing a temporary shutdown at an airport over the weekend, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer asked that a drone detection device be brought to New York and New Jersey. Two days after New York Stewart International Airport closed due to drone sightings in the area, Schumer submitted the request to the Department of Homeland Security.

Because of their 360-degree technology, he argued that Robin Radar Systems had a higher possibility of identifying drones than linear systems. Despite the number of sightings, Schumer told reporters, “it’s remarkable that we have more questions than answers.”

According to Schumer, only government authorities are currently legally permitted to detect drones. He said he, too, would be pushing legislation to broaden the rights for state and local law enforcement agencies to be able to use softwareto detect the unmanned aerial devices.
