Early Morning Crash on Illinois 97 Leaves 2 Dead, Investigation Ongoing

KHN A head-on collision on Illinois 97, just west of Farmington Cemetery Road in rural Sangamon County, killed two persons around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Illinois State Police.

The crash occurred around eight miles northwest of Springfield.

A motorist in a Mitsubishi Outlander heading east on Route 97 crossed the centerline and collided with the driver of a Hyundai Sonata moving in the opposite direction.

According to ISP Trooper Jayme Bufford’s report, the reason the driver crossed the centerline was “unknown.”

Neither vehicle included any passengers.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said that a 63-year-old male died at the site.

A 43-year-old lady was transported to Springfield Memorial Hospital and eventually died. Allmon stated that the identities will be published once relatives have been notified.

Bufford had a handful of witnesses who had stopped at the crash site, but no one had seen the actual crash. Route 97 was closed to traffic in both directions for roughly six hours Saturday morning, according to the ISP.

The crash is still being investigated.
