Heat Advisory Issued in Mississippi Dangerous Temps, High Energy Demand Expected

Temperatures and heat index readings will reach near-record highs during the whole week in Mississippi, placing communities at risk of heat illness and power outages. All of this will be caused by the relentless and dangerous heat that will blanket the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, maximum heat index readings ranging from 105 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit are anticipated to be recorded everyday across a significant portion of the state until Friday.

The northwestern region, which includes Greenwood and Clarksdale, is predicted to experience “Significant” Level 3 heat stress. It is quite expected that “Heat Advisories” will be in place on a daily basis, and “Extreme Heat Warnings” may be issued for counties in which the heat index either approaches or exceeds 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

The effects will be particularly severe in Greenwood, Yazoo City, and throughout the Mississippi Delta, where afternoon high temperatures will approach the upper 90s and the heat index may exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

Outdoor activities that last for an extended period of time are strongly discouraged because heat stroke and exhaustion are becoming more likely to occur under these conditions. A “Elevated” Level 2 risk will continue to be in effect in Jackson, Philadelphia, and the adjacent areas.

This means that there is a high probability of heat-related illness, particularly for individuals who do not have access to dependable air conditioning.

The residents are strongly encouraged to limit their time spent outside, to check on their neighbors who are susceptible, to never leave people or dogs in vehicles, and to drink plenty of water.

Local schools and workers who are outside should make adjustments to their timetables or bring activities inside whenever it is possible to do so.

It is anticipated that this potentially hazardous heat pattern will continue at least until Friday, and additional advisories may be issued if the circumstances continue to deteriorate.

Be sure to stay tuned for future updates and get ready for the possibility of strain on the electrical system as demand increases.
