Portland, OR — A missing hunter who was reported lost in the Harris Ranch area of Lincoln County has been found safe after an overnight search, authorities confirmed. The man was located by Search and Rescue (SAR) teams in a steep, brush-covered drainage area early Wednesday morning.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the hunter became stranded in an area with dense vegetation and limited visibility near Highway 34 in Tidewater, Oregon. Despite the difficult terrain and late-night conditions, rescue crews were able to track him down using items he had dropped along the way.
Family’s Call Sparks Late-Night Search
Just before midnight on November 6, the hunter’s family contacted authorities after discovering his vehicle parked off Highway 34. A patrol sergeant responded to the scene and quickly called for backup from the Search and Rescue team.
Officials told KOIN 6 News that SAR teams arrived soon after and began combing the steep drainage area where the man was believed to be.
“SAR personnel arrived on scene and began their search in the area where the hunter was believed to be,” officials said. “They located several personal items that confirmed the hunter’s earlier presence and tracked a trail of belongings further down the drainage.”
The hunter was eventually found wet but uninjured, and was able to walk out on his own. He was evaluated on-site by rescuers before reuniting with his family and friends waiting nearby.
Search and Rescue Teams Praised
Authorities praised the teamwork and quick response of the Lincoln County Search and Rescue unit. The dense terrain and wet conditions made visibility extremely difficult, officials noted, but persistence paid off in a successful recovery.
“The hunter was fortunate to be found in good health given the steep and heavily wooded area,” SAR officials said.
The sheriff’s office also extended gratitude to community volunteers who assist with wilderness searches throughout the year.
Safety Reminder for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Following the rescue, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder urging hunters and hikers to be prepared for the rapidly changing fall weather across the Oregon coast and mountains.
Authorities advised outdoor enthusiasts to always:
- Check local weather conditions before setting out.
- Wear waterproof and windproof clothing to stay dry and warm.
- Avoid cotton garments, which trap moisture and increase the risk of hypothermia.
- Inform someone of your travel plans and expected return time.
- Carry essentials such as navigation tools, food, water, and a flashlight.
“When venturing out in rainy or windy weather, wear clothing that is water-resistant and windproof,” officials said. “Avoid cotton garments, as they retain moisture and can rapidly draw heat from the body, increasing the risk of hypothermia.”
The sheriff’s office credited the man’s survival to swift reporting by his family and the dedication of SAR personnel, reminding everyone that preparedness can make all the difference in outdoor emergencies.
