In a ceremony held in Missoula on Saturday, Montana Representative Zooey Zephyr, who was the first transgender woman elected to the state legislature, wed writer and activist Erin Reed.

Zephyr said, “What a perfect wedding, my love,” on social media on Tuesday. “Every moment of that day will always be engraved in my heart. And the core of all I do will be my commitments, which range from offering you tender love to becoming a good mother to our boy.”

Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, an LGBTQ media advocacy group, officiated the wedding, which was set to a string quartet’s performance of “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service.

In her email, Reedwrote, “I opened my book and let my heart spill out when it came time for my vows.” “I talked about all the reasons I adore Zooey, including how her love grows stronger in the face of hardship, how her stunning eyes delicately change color in response to her feelings, how sincere and humorous she is, and how her feet naturally find the beat of every song. I talked about how much it meant to me that my son has come to adore her as well and how she turns ordinary experiences into fantastical excursions for him. I assured her that I would give her a love that would make her feel at home and like family. I gave her my word that I would be with her forever.

Following a ceremony at the Missoula County Fairgrounds, where they were engaged during a Queer Prom event in May 2023, they rejoiced with friends and family.

Several well-known transgender individuals were present, such as Colorado state representative Brianna Titone, the first trans woman elected to the state legislature; Lia Thomas, the first trans woman to win an NCAA championship; and Lilly Wachowski, who co-directed the first three Matrix movies with her sister Lana Wachowski.

According to NBC News last year, the couple first connected in the spring of 2022 while organizing with other activists in response to Texas’s decision to start looking into the parents of trans youngsters.

Since then, both of them have gained national recognition as LGBTQ community advocates. Reed, who is based in Maryland, has become as a significant advocate in the trans community through her newsletter, Erin In the Morning, where she covers trans rights, and Zephyr garnered international notice following her censure by the Montana Legislature last year.
