David Hogg, a prominent anti-violence activist and survivor of the 2018 shooting at his Parkland, Florida, high school, has entered a bid to lead the Democratic prominent Committee.
Hogg, 24, declared his intention to run for vice chair of the Democratic National Committee on Monday, claiming he would concentrate on regaining the support of young voters who had defected from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. According to NBC News exit polling, young people who four years ago overwhelmingly supported President Joe Biden voted Donald Trump in greater percentages than they had for any Republican presidential contender since 2008. This change occurred suddenly and powerfully in November.
In order to rebuild our coalition following the significant shift to the right among young people in this election, we need to put a fresh emphasis on our youth outreach in all states and territories going forward, Hogg said in a statement.
In addition to reaching out to young voters, Hogg is calling on the party to examine itself more closely in order to evaluate the defeats suffered by Democrats on November 5. Despite having frequently warned of the threats Trump would bring to democracy if he were re-elected, he was scathing of several members of Vice President Kamala Harris’ team, in particular, saying they adopted an almost blase tone after Harris lost.
“You raised a ridiculous sum of money. We lost the race that we were trying to [win]. And rather than only shielding the consultants who initially led us here, it’s time to truly pull back the curtain and ask, ‘OK, what did we do wrong?'” Hogg stated in an interview.
Hogg claimed to be actively pursuing the vice chair contest, having already sent emails to all 448 of the DNC’s current members who will vote in the election and quickly scheduling follow-up meetings.
Hogg was furious over what he said was the party’s ignorance in the months leading up to the election. According to Hogg, he questioned why the party wasn’t doing more to connect with young men at a brunch held before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August.
“Several consultants sent me messages that said, ‘Here you go, saying this stupid stuff again.'” We would want to live in a consultant-curated fake environment, which is representative of the larger issue facing the Democratic Party, Hogg said, as if they understand what young people are thinking.
Following the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which claimed 17 lives, Hogg became well-known around the country. He took the initiative and organized marches calling for stricter gun control regulations with his peers.
Following the shooting, Hogg and his classmates started March For Our Lives, a gun safety organization that claims to have contributed to the passage of more than 250 gun control laws.
Hogg later founded the organization Leaders We Deserve, which works to elect youth to local and national public office.
Hogg expressed concern that some of the gun safety efforts may be threatened by Trump’s term and that Democrats are not taking these risks seriously, especially after warning about them in the lead-up to the election.
“People leaving the party after the election and the overall attitude being, ‘Well, there’s nothing we could have done better,’ is what really irritates me. Let’s raise our hands and head to corporate America to secure consulting positions. “I hope to see you all there,” Hogg remarked.
Since current Chair Jaime Harrison announced his resignation, Hogg’s announcement is the most recent development regarding the next DNC leadership. Even though it outspent him and boasted of greater organizational strength in the weeks leading up to the election, the party is still in shock after losing the White House to Trump.
Before the committee’s membership votes on February 1, candidates for the DNC chair will participate in forums in January. Vice Chair Ken Martin, the Minnesota Party Chair; Wisconsin Party Chair Ben Wikler; former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley; and New York State Senator James Skoufis are among the DNC chair contenders that have been announced thus far.
