Even if electric vehicles are the way of the future for all of our roadways, there are still a lot of questions about them, particularly about the batteries. Many people think that car batteries last the same amount of time as iPhone batteries, but is that really the case? The shift to sustainable mobility is imminent now that the skepticism surrounding electric vehicles (EVs) has been removed by a study conducted by the Stanford Battery Center and SLAC. We share with you all the findings of this investigation.
This study changes everything
Due to concerns that the battery would not last long enough and that the vehicle’s usable life would soon be ended, many people have always been hesitant to purchase an electric car. However, they have since learned that, with good care, they can live up to a third longer than anticipated.
How does it differ from traditional methods?
Batteries are currently tested in controlled environments with consistent, uniform charging and discharging, but this approach does not really represent how our cars are used on a daily basis.
However, the goal of this new study is to demonstrate how batteries function in practical settings. How? Very easy, in just three easy steps:
Does this change anything for users?
Obviously, this is excellent news for individuals who have never wanted to drive an EV, but for those who were unsure about whether to purchase an EV or not, and the concept of periodically changing the battery due to wear didn’t quite fit into their plans, it’s great news. Making the switch to electric vehicles is not simple, but a longer-lasting battery means fewer issues (and most importantly, less expensive repairs). Remember that electric vehicles are the way of the future, and as battery prices have decreased recently, they are becoming a more affordable alternative for anyone.
Is it just an economic impact?
No! Consider that if these batteries live longer, fewer would be produced, reducing the environmental effect of their creation. This would benefit our world and all of us.
In addition to consumers, manufacturers will have the ability to affect how businesses test their batteries in order to give more accurate sales data.
One of the study’s authors, Simona Onori, claims that we haven’t been properly checking batteries. They discovered that batteries experience less wear and tear than previously believed after modifying the tests to replicate actual vehicle usage.
Therefore, this study is simply the beginning of the investigation into the sustainability of this kind of battery, which may be used for solar panels or wind energy in addition to automobiles to extend their lifespan (and prevent them from becoming so close to obsolescence). This discovery opens the door to a cleaner environment in a world where sustainability is becoming more and more important.
You know, if you were on the fence about purchasing an electric car, now is the time!
