Anza Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Fatally Shooting Father During Dispute

Anthony David Holguin, a 26-year-old from Anza, has been handed a severe sentence of 40 years to life in state prison for the tragic murder of his father, David Jose Holguin. The incident occurred when the victim intervened in a dispute between the defendant and his girlfriend, resulting in a senseless act of violence that shocked the community.

A Murrieta jury delivered a verdict of first-degree murder against Anthony Holguin in November, along with additional charges of illegal possession of a firearm and sentence-enhancing allegations related to gun use and causing great bodily injury. The fatal shooting took place in 2019 at the 39000 block of Cary Road in Anza, marking a devastating loss for the victim’s family and loved ones.

During the sentencing hearing at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Timothy Freer imposed the maximum sentence permitted by law, reflecting the gravity of the offense and the irreparable harm caused by Holguin’s actions.

The tragic incident unfolded amidst a heated dispute between Holguin and his girlfriend, fueled by drug use and escalating tensions. Court documents reveal that Holguin, under the influence of methamphetamine, became involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend, prompting intervention from his father.

In a moment of unspeakable horror, Holguin retrieved a shotgun and fatally shot his father, inflicting fatal wounds that tragically ended his life within seconds. Despite attempts to justify his actions through contradictory accounts and false claims, evidence presented during the trial overwhelmingly refuted Holguin’s narrative.

Forensic evidence and witness testimonies painted a chilling picture of the events leading up to the murder, underscoring the senselessness of the crime and the devastating impact on the victim’s family and the community at large.

The swift and decisive verdict delivered by the jury, coupled with the maximum sentence imposed by Judge Freer, sends a clear message that acts of violence will not be tolerated.
