Storm Risk in Reno 40% Chance of Thunderstorms, Lightning Threats Until July 26

It is anticipated that thunderstorms will continue to rumble across the Sierra Nevada and the mountains of northern California until Saturday night.

These storms will bring lightning, strong winds, and the possibility of new fire starts, particularly in the areas surrounding Reno, Susanville, and the Tahoe region.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento reports that the likelihood of thunderstorms increases with each passing day, going from 17% in Reno on Wednesday to a risk of 40% by Saturday night.

On Friday, Susanville is estimated to have a probability of 43 percent, while Hawthorne and Bishop are also at an increased danger throughout the weekend.

Less than two percent of the likelihood of precipitation is expected to fall in Sacramento and the Bay Area.

There is a possibility that localized storms will create brief downpours, tiny hail, and abrupt road slickness along the Interstate 80 corridor and along key passes such as Donner and Echo Summit.

This is where the most severe weather is predicted to occur.

Lightning strikes might start new wildfires, according to the United States Forest Service, particularly in areas where grass and brush have not been able to dry out as a result of recent heatwaves.

It is important for travelers to avoid driving on mountain roads during the afternoon and evening hours, to secure any loose objects that are found outside, and to have alternative power sources available.

Whenever thunder rumbles, you should take refuge inside and keep away from ridgelines.

While the likelihood of thunderstorms is at its highest on Friday and Saturday, it gradually decreases on Sunday. As additional storms form, it is possible that additional watches and warnings will be issued.
