Residents of a Tampa apartment complex were in for a surprise when they spotted a kangaroo hopping around the premises, prompting an unexpected 9-1-1 call and a comical exchange with dispatchers.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of February 8, saw the typically Australian marsupial navigating its way around the complex’s pool area, captured on aerial night vision footage. The bewildered resident who made the emergency call relayed the bizarre situation to the dispatcher, who, in turn, updated other responders on the large kangaroo’s location within the gated pool area.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office swiftly responded to the call, managing to corral the kangaroo within the confines of the pool area. Their agriculture unit played a crucial role in reuniting the kangaroo with its owner, whose ownership of the marsupial was duly registered and verified.
While the circumstances behind the kangaroo’s escapade remain unclear, it was noted that keeping kangaroos as pets is permitted in Florida with appropriate permits. The kangaroo, affectionately named “Hopper,” was safely returned to its owner’s custody. Commentary on social media ranged from amusement to disbelief, with one user jokingly mentioning the kangaroo resisting arrest by boxing its way out.
