Las Vegas, NV – A devastating high-speed collision in the northwest valley left two people dead and four others hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon, prompting Metro police to warn the public about the increasing danger of reckless driving on local roads.
The crash occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard, where a speeding eastbound driver slammed into several vehicles that were stopped at a red light. The force of the impact caused catastrophic damage at the scene, leading authorities to shut down the entire intersection for nearly 12 hours before reopening it around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Details of the Collision
Las Vegas Metro police said one of the vehicles involved was traveling at a significantly high rate of speed as it approached the intersection. Without slowing down, it collided with multiple vehicles waiting at the light.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while four more were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to severe.
Police Response and Early Findings
Responding officers described the scene as one of the most severe in recent months. According to preliminary findings, speed was the primary factor in the crash.
Deputy Chief Jose Hernandez emphasized the impact unsafe driving continues to have on Valley residents.
“You can look at the wreckage left due to this vehicle’s driving,” Hernandez said. “It’s yet another reminder of how 10 families whose lives will be changed forever.”
He added that speeding continues to be a widespread and dangerous behavior:
“High speeds are never OK. You can see the result of that behind me. We all have to take an active role in how we drive.”
Metro Police Issue Public Warning
Only hours after the collision, Metro shared a stark message on its Facebook page, referencing the string of tragedies officers had responded to that day.
“Three fatal crashes in under 24 hours. This is not normal. One of these collisions claimed two lives. Three lives gone in a single day. Three families shattered. And all of it preventable.”
The department urged drivers to consider current road conditions, noting that wet roads and excessive speed is a deadly combination on Las Vegas streets.
“Our roads are wet. Conditions are dangerous. Drivers are still going too fast, too distracted, and too careless for what the roadway demands. We cannot, and will not allow this level of tragedy to become our new normal in Las Vegas.”
Road Closure and Traffic Impact
Following the crash, the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard was closed in all directions as investigators worked the scene and crews cleared debris. The closure lasted approximately 12 hours before reopening to traffic early Wednesday morning.
