New Yorkers are being cautioned against consuming certain seafood products after a recent discovery by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The agency has issued a public health alert for frozen fish products that have been illegally imported from China, emphasizing the products’ ineligibility for U.S. entry and their unsuitability for human consumption.

Critical Information on the Illegal Seafood Importation

The FSIS has identified that these frozen fish products, having bypassed legal importation protocols, have made their way into New York State, as well as Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. The agency stresses that these products are unfit for human consumption and has issued warnings to both retailers and consumers.

Identifying the Affected Seafood

The seafood in question encompasses a range of frozen fish products that were intended for retail and wholesale distribution within New York and the two aforementioned states. It is specifically noted that while raw Siluriformes fish products from certain establishments in China are permitted for importation, they must originate from a certified establishment—a criterion these products failed to meet.

Guidance for Consumers and Retailers

In light of these findings, FSIS is expressing concern that some of these illegal fish products may already be in the possession of retailers and consumers, potentially residing in freezers or refrigerators. Retailers who have acquired these products are advised against selling them, while consumers who have purchased them are strongly recommended to refrain from consumption. The correct disposal method involves double-bagging the products before discarding them to minimize the risk of wildlife access.

As of the latest updates, no adverse health reactions have been reported in connection with the consumption of the affected fish. However, anyone experiencing health concerns potentially related to these products is advised to seek medical attention promptly.

This situation underscores the importance of vigilance in the food supply chain and the need for consumers to remain informed about the origins and safety of their food purchases.
