In a show of unity and support, residents of Ames, Iowa, are standing by their LGBTQ+ neighbors after several Pride flags were stolen from homes in the area.
The thefts began in early June, just as Pride Month celebrations were kicking off. Many residents noticed that their rainbow flags, a symbol of love and inclusion, were suddenly missing from their front yards.
These incidents didn’t go unnoticed. Instead of staying silent, the community decided to act. Dozens of people gathered outside a local home where a Pride flag had been taken, replacing it with new ones. Some even brought handmade signs with messages of support and encouragement for the LGBTQ+ community.
One of the affected residents, who had a Progress Pride flag stolen from her yard, said the support from neighbors meant the world to her. “I was heartbroken when I saw it was gone, but seeing everyone show up and help me put up a new one reminded me that I’m not alone,” she shared.
Local leaders and residents also took to social media to condemn the thefts and spread awareness. Many people posted photos of their own Pride flags with captions encouraging others to display theirs proudly. Some shared tips on how to better secure the flags so they can’t be easily removed.
The Ames Police Department confirmed they are aware of the incidents and are investigating them. They encouraged anyone with information to come forward. At the same time, officers emphasized that hate-related crimes and vandalism will be taken seriously.
