Former U.S. President Donald Trump has made headlines once again with his latest remarks about overhauling the American tax system and tackling crime.
Speaking at multiple public events, Trump proposed replacing income taxes with revenue generated from tariffs and floated the idea of sending violent criminals to prisons in El Salvador.
Trump Wants Tariffs to Replace Income Taxes
During a recent speech, Trump claimed that tariffs — taxes on imported goods — could be a major revenue source for the U.S. government. He believes they could even take the place of traditional income tax collection in the long run.
“We were making two billion and three billion dollars a day. We never made money like that,” Trump said, suggesting that revenue from tariffs was stronger than what the U.S. had earned from income taxes in the past.
He explained that historically, the U.S. relied on tariffs for revenue before the income tax system was introduced in 1913. Trump argued that America could return to that system to ease the tax burden on ordinary citizens.
“Brilliantly, in 1913, they went to the income tax system. Then around 1931 or 1932, they tried to bring back tariffs, but it was too late,” he added, referencing the Great Depression era.
Trump paused on some of the tariff hikes recently to give the economy “a little flexibility” and to support a smooth transition.
But he made it clear that, if elected again, he would push hard for tariffs to play a bigger role in funding the government.
Trump Praises El Salvador’s President for Tough Prison Policies

Trump also spoke highly of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who is known for building massive prisons to crack down on gang violence.
Bukele’s aggressive policies have received global attention, especially for reducing crime rates in El Salvador.
Trump proposed a controversial solution: transferring violent criminals from the United States to El Salvador’s prisons.
“We’re using his system because we’re getting rid of our criminals from out of the United States that were allowed to come in by Biden,” Trump said, criticizing current immigration and crime policies.
He added that Bukele has made El Salvador “a very safe place,” and that his prison system could serve as a model for the U.S.
“He’s also built one but also other prisons. Very big ones,” Trump emphasized.
Trump’s Ideas Draw Mixed Reactions
Trump’s comments have triggered mixed responses across political circles. While some supporters appreciate his tough talk and unconventional ideas, critics warn that relying heavily on tariffs could raise consumer prices and hurt international trade relations. Sending prisoners abroad could also raise legal and human rights concerns.
Still, Trump’s statements reflect a broader theme of his political comeback strategy — positioning himself as someone who can fix what he calls a “broken system.”
With the 2024 elections approaching, Trump’s bold plans on taxes and crime may become key talking points in the coming months.
