Drug Emporium Announces Closure of All West Virginia Locations

Drug Emporium, a well-known retail chain offering health products, groceries, and pharmacy services, is facing significant changes. In West Virginia, all Drug Emporium locations are set to close.

President Bob Petryszak announced that going-out-of-business sales will begin soon, marking the end of an era for these stores.

The closures are attributed to declining customer traffic, especially after the pharmacies in Kanawha City, Patrick Street-Charleston, and Barboursville were sold to Walgreens.

Petryszak mentioned that the loss of pharmacy services significantly impacted store visits, making it unsustainable to continue operations. Long-time customers expressed sadness over the closures, noting the store’s long-standing presence in the community.

In Amarillo, Texas, the Drug Emporium store at 4210 SW 45th Ave remains open and continues to serve the community. This location offers a wide range of products, including vitamins, health foods, and cosmetics.

The store is known for its extensive selection and affordable prices, attracting customers from surrounding areas. There are no current indications that the Amarillo store is at risk of closing.Y

Drug Emporium’s history dates back to 1977, with the company experiencing significant growth in the 1990s. However, increased competition and challenges in adapting to online retail led to financial difficulties, resulting in bankruptcy in 2001.

Despite these challenges, some independently owned stores, like the one in Amarillo, have continued to operate successfully.

As the retail landscape evolves, Drug Emporium’s future will depend on its ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences and market conditions.

For now, customers in Amarillo can continue to enjoy the store’s offerings, while those in West Virginia prepare to say goodbye to a familiar shopping destination.
