A man was shot and killed during a child custody exchange in Texas, according to the Killeen Police Department. The incident happened around 9:53 a.m. on May 26 in the 4700 block of Bear River Drive.
Police say the man had traveled from another state to pick up his child as part of a court-approved visitation agreement.
When he arrived at the location to meet the child’s mother and carry out the exchange, an argument broke out.
According to officials, during the argument, the child’s mother took out a gun and fired multiple times at the man.
He was hit several times and was seriously injured. Emergency crews responded quickly and took the man to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, but he did not survive his injuries.
The name of the man who died has not been released yet. Police say they are still investigating the case to understand what led to the shooting and whether the use of the weapon was planned or happened in the heat of the moment.
So far, police have not confirmed whether the woman involved has been arrested or charged. Investigators are working to gather evidence and speak to witnesses.
The incident has shocked the local community, especially since it happened in front of a child. Child custody exchanges are usually emotional, but this one ended in a terrible tragedy.
Police are urging anyone who saw what happened or has more information to come forward. The case is being handled by Killeen Police Department’s homicide unit.
