Florida Motorcyclist Arrested After Reckless Evade and Crash Incident in Clearwater

A reckless motorcyclist led Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers on a high-speed chase before crashing into an SUV at the intersection of US-19 and Drew Street in Clearwater on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The incident unfolded around 12:28 p.m. and left the motorcyclist, identified as 24-year-old Justin Stefke of Largo, injured and facing a slew of charges.

The pursuit began when an FHP trooper noticed a white motorcycle traveling south on US-19 and State Road 580 without a license plate. Upon attempting to verify the absence of a license plate, the trooper activated emergency equipment to pull over the motorcyclist. However, Stefke, riding a black Yamaha motorcycle, evaded the trooper by accelerating rapidly and changing lanes recklessly. Despite the trooper’s attempts to apprehend him, Stefke continued to exceed speeds of 100 MPH.

As the chase progressed, Stefke exited US-19 onto Drew Street, where he approached a red light at an intersection. Ignoring the signal, he plowed through the intersection without yielding, resulting in a collision with an SUV. The impact caused Stefke to lose control of the motorcycle, ejecting him onto the pavement.

Emergency Medical Services promptly transported Stefke to the trauma center at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment of his injuries. Meanwhile, the trooper relayed information about the motorcycle’s VIN number, which revealed it was unregistered.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Stefke possessed only an ID card and lacked a motorcycle endorsement. Additionally, his license had been suspended since March 1, 2023, due to habitual traffic offenses.

Stefke now faces multiple charges, including aggravated fleeing and eluding, operating a motorcycle without an endorsement, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, among others. Notably, he is categorized as a habitual traffic offender under Florida law, defined as someone accumulating a specified number of convictions for traffic offenses within a 5-year period.
