Four people were injured, including a child, in a serious two-vehicle crash on Port Tobacco Road in Charles County, Maryland.
The crash happened on Saturday afternoon, June 1, around 2:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of Port Tobacco Road, near the Nanjemoy area. Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the scene.
Emergency crews arrived to find two badly damaged vehicles. One of the injured victims was a child who had to be flown to a trauma center by a Maryland State Police helicopter.
The helicopter landed in a nearby field so that medics could safely transport the child to a nearby children’s hospital. The child’s current condition has not yet been shared.
Three more people were hurt in the crash and were taken to a local hospital by ambulance. Officials say all of them had non-life-threatening injuries. Photos from the crash site show significant damage to the front ends of both vehicles involved.
Port Tobacco Road was shut down for several hours while police and rescue teams worked on the scene. Firefighters and emergency medical staff from surrounding departments were called in to help. Crews also had to clean up debris and fluids from the road before it was reopened.
Investigators from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office are looking into what caused the crash. So far, no details have been released about how the collision happened or if any charges will be filed.
Traffic delays were reported in the area during the road closure. Drivers were asked to avoid the section of Port Tobacco Road near the crash site and take alternate routes.
Authorities thanked nearby residents for their patience as emergency crews worked. The sheriff’s office has not released the names or ages of those involved in the crash yet. The investigation is ongoing.
