All Kentuckians are being reminded by Team Kentucky to celebrate responsibly if they plan to have alcohol during their Independence Day festivities.

Team Kentucky is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to warn drivers that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving, since impaired driving collisions tend to rise during the holidays. A driver’s ability to drive safely can be impacted by even one drink. Before the celebrations start, make arrangements for a sober designated driver to help reduce the number of fatalities and major injuries on Kentucky’s roads.

Governor Andy Beshear said, “As we commemorate our country’s independence, I urge every Kentuckian to make wise decisions and prioritize safety.” Driving while intoxicated endangers both your life and the lives of others. Make a reservation in advance, designate a driver, or use a ride-sharing service. Above all, avoid driving when intoxicated. By working together, we can ensure that everyone in the Commonwealth has a happy and safe holiday weekend.

The Kentucky State Police database indicates that during the Fourth of July holiday last year, there were 93 collisions in Kentucky that involved a driver who was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, resulting in eight fatalities and 41 injuries.

Throughout the Christmas season, KOHS is working with state and local law enforcement to expand sobriety checkpoints and high-visibility patrols as part of the countrywide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Transportation Secretary Jim Gray stated that using drugs or alcohol while driving puts both you and other drivers at danger. These drugs impair one’s ability to think clearly, act fast, and maintain composure. Even though you may feel comfortable driving, you’re not. The danger is simply not worth it.

Use these suggestions to avoid tragedies:

Make plans to return home safely at the end of the evening before the celebrations start.

To go home safely if you’re intoxicated, use public transportation, a taxi, a ride-booking service, or a sober friend or relative.

Safely stop and call the police if you witness an intoxicated motorist. You can call 911 or the Kentucky State Police’s toll-free number, 800-222-5555.

Take their keys and assist them in making other plans to reach their location safely if you know someone who is going to drive or ride while intoxicated.

* Fasten your seat belt! It is the best defense against an intoxicated motorist in addition to being the law. In the event of an accident, wearing a seat belt helps reduce the risk of harm or death.
