A Wisconsin teen accused of killing a 10-year-old girl is seeking a change of venue before his trial.
Carson T. Peters-Berger faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault, and first-degree sexual assault of a child.
The case is linked to the April 2022 disappearance of Lily Peters, a fourth grader from Chippewa Falls. She went missing after visiting her aunt’s house and never returning home. Her body was found the next morning in the woods near Leinenkugel’s Brewery.
According to the criminal complaint, Peters-Berger, who was 14 at the time, fled the scene after allegedly assaulting and killing Lily. The following day, after hearing about the search for her, he returned to move her body and conceal it with leaves.
Lily’s death deeply impacted the community, leading to displays of support such as “Justice for Lily” signs, purple ribbons, and memorial benches, including one near the county courthouse.
Defense attorney Michael Cohen is requesting a venue change, arguing that the case’s extensive media coverage and public sentiment could prevent a fair trial. He points to local news coverage, front-page newspaper stories, and social media comments that he claims are prejudicial.
Cohen is asking for the trial to be relocated to another Wisconsin county or for jurors to be selected from outside the area.
