More than 200 teacher vacancies as CMS school year starts — but that’s an improvement

Less than two weeks before classes begin, district officials revealed the most recent statistics at Tuesday night’s school board meeting: there are 243 open teaching positions in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.

That amounts to roughly 1.3 teacher openings per school.

However, that figure indicates a 97.4% fill rate for teaching positions. According to school authorities, there are 55 fewer openings than there were at this time last year, which is an improvement over previous years. There were over 500 openings two years ago.

Ingrid Medlock, Chief of Staff and Community Engagement, informed the board that the enhancements showcase the district’s fresh and creative hiring practices.

We will keep up our recruitment efforts to fill our openings throughout the year, Medlock stated. Plans have been developed to ensure that every kid is receiving top-notch instruction from a certified teacher.

In recent years, as discussions concerning North Carolina’s comparatively low teacher pay have continued, teacher attrition has been a subject of contention for schools around the state.

According to the Department of Public Instruction’s most recent State of the Teaching Profession report, vacancies have risen throughout the state throughout the past three academic years and reached a record high last year.
