Over the past 40 years, travelers heading into The Wildwoods have witnessed major changes to the roadways leading onto the island.
Whether you’re using Exit 6 from the Garden State Parkway to reach North Wildwood or Exit 4 to enter the City of Wildwood, both routes and their connecting bridges have seen significant upgrades.
One of the most impactful changes came in the 1990s with the major reconstruction of North Wildwood Boulevard.
This project replaced outdated and dangerous bridges with safer, more modern structures that now connect Route 147 to Ocean Drive in North Wildwood.
Three decades later, another important update is set to affect drivers heading into North Wildwood.
New Traffic Pattern Alert on Route 147
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has informed the Middle Township City Council about new speed limit changes along Route 147, which is the main route into North Wildwood.
While Route 147 mostly runs through Middle Township, it is a state-maintained road.
The official North Wildwood city limit begins at the base of the Beach Creek Bridge, even though the entire stretch of highway is often referred to as North Wildwood Boulevard.
Here’s how the speed limits are changing:
- From the Garden State Parkway to the Grassy Sound Free Bridge: The speed limit remains 50 MPH
- From the bottom of the Grassy Sound Free Bridge to the start of the Beach Creek Bridge (where Route 147 merges with Ocean Drive/County Road 619): The speed limit is now 40 MPH
- At the bottom of the Beach Creek Bridge, marking the beginning of North Wildwood’s city limits, the speed limit has been reduced from 30 MPH to 25 MPH
Although not all new signs have been installed yet, these speed limit changes officially took effect in March 2025 and are already being enforced.
So if you’re planning a trip to North Wildwood, make sure to take it slow and watch for speed changes as you cross into town.
