A road repair project that started in a San Antonio neighborhood on the Northwest Side has taken a turn that many residents did not expect.
What was supposed to improve the streets has now led to major complaints about water drainage and property damage.
The neighborhood near Rochelle Street was already dealing with old drainage issues. But after the roadwork began, some residents say the water now collects even worse in their yards.
One resident, Rose Guerrero, said that water used to flow smoothly down the street before the construction, but now it stops and builds up in front of homes. She believes the new road design has made things worse.
Guerrero and her husband have lived in their home for nearly 30 years. She said they used to be proud of how water flowed easily from their driveway during the rains. But ever since the city worked on the roads, puddles have been forming, and the front yard now looks messy after every rainfall.
The construction project was part of San Antonio’s 2017 bond, which approved nearly $3 million for street improvements in this area.
The City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department says that they are aware of the concerns and is looking into them.
Guerrero also shared videos and photos showing how water now pools on the street. She says she tried to contact the city several times but didn’t get any helpful response. Now, she wants the city to come back and fix the problem before it damages her property further.
According to city officials, they are inspecting the area and have met with Guerrero. They claim that the street was made to meet the original design plans, but they are doing a drainage check to see if anything was missed.
For now, residents are left hoping that the city will take quick action. Many say they feel ignored and disappointed. What started as a road repair project meant to help has become a new headache for this small community.
