Popular Birmingham-Area Pizza Restaurant to Close Final Location This Week

A popular Birmingham-area pizza restaurant, once recognized as one of the best in the country, is closing its final location by the end of this week.

Post Office Pies, which first opened in 2014 in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, quickly gained national attention for its wood-fired, made-from-scratch pizzas.

Over the years, the restaurant earned praise from food publications and national outlets like The Daily Meal and Thrillist, which included it in their lists of the best pizza places in America.

The last remaining Post Office Pies location in Mountain Brook will permanently close its doors on Saturday, June 8, according to a social media post shared by the restaurant. In that message, the owners thanked their loyal customers for a decade of support and explained the decision was not made lightly.

“After 10 incredible years, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors,” the post read. “We are grateful for all the support and memories we’ve shared with our community.”

The restaurant was known not just for its food, but also for its atmosphere. It had a casual, friendly vibe and served as a go-to spot for locals, families, and college students. Their menu featured handcrafted pizzas with locally sourced ingredients, fresh salads, and specialty drinks, all of which helped them stand out in a city full of great food options.

Post Office Pies was co-founded by Chef John Hall, a Birmingham native who returned to Alabama after working in top restaurants in New York City. His goal was to bring quality pizza made with fresh ingredients to his hometown, and the restaurant quickly became a local favorite.

The original location in Avondale was built inside a former post office building, which inspired the name. It became a busy hangout spot, especially on weekends and game nights. In addition to Mountain Brook, the business briefly expanded to Tuscaloosa, but that location closed a few years ago.

The closure of the Mountain Brook location marks the end of the Post Office Pies journey. While the restaurant did not give specific details about the reason for shutting down, many small businesses across the country have struggled with rising costs and post-pandemic economic shifts.

Some customers expressed sadness and disappointment in the comments on the restaurant’s post, sharing their memories of birthday parties, date nights, and weekly pizza traditions. Others thanked the staff and owners for years of good service and food.

The restaurant industry has seen many similar closures in recent months, especially among independent and small-chain eateries. According to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), local restaurants continue to face challenges like staffing shortages, inflation, and changing customer habits.

The Mountain Brook area, while known for its strong community support for local businesses, has not been immune to these trends. Still, residents say the closure of such an iconic eatery leaves a gap in the local food scene.

Post Office Pies did not announce any plans for the brand or whether they might return in another form later. As of now, fans are encouraged to visit the Mountain Brook restaurant before June 8 to enjoy one final slice.

Those who want to support similar local businesses can find a list of small food establishments in Alabama through the Alabama Department of Commerce, which highlights local restaurants and food businesses.

For now, Birmingham pizza lovers are saying goodbye to a restaurant that played a major role in shaping the city’s modern food identity — one slice at a time.
