Michael Stewart, leader of the Satanic Grotto, was charged with disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly after an incident at the Kansas State Capitol on March 28.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Stewart and the Satanic Grotto had been granted a permit to gather outside the Capitol on the east side from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that Friday.
At 11:28 a.m., Stewart entered the building, where he was informed by the Department of Administration that he could enter but was not allowed to engage in any demonstrations.
Despite this, he passed through security and made his way to the first-floor rotunda, where he began his dedication to Satan.
This led to an altercation between Stewart, 42, and 21-year-old Marcus Schroeder, resulting in both men being taken into custody.
Schroeder was arrested for disorderly conduct. Two other individuals, 32-year-old Jocelyn Frazee and 50-year-old Sean Anderson, who entered the building with Stewart to demonstrate, were also arrested for unlawful assembly.
Kansas Highway Patrol officials confirmed that the cases will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for further review.
Additionally, a lawsuit filed by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, demanding the return of sacred items held by Stewart, was dismissed by the District Court of Leavenworth County.
