Still No Fix in Sight: Why Most NJ Roads Are Falling Apart This April?

Not that it’s a bad thing—actually, it’s a pleasant surprise. But still, it feels a bit unusual.

By this time of year, we’re usually swerving around crater-sized potholes on New Jersey’s roads and highways. April is typically prime time for these pesky road hazards. But this year? Things seem… oddly calm.

Not that I’m complaining—far from it. It’s just curious. Why don’t the potholes seem nearly as bad as they’ve been in past years?

Could It Be Better Maintenance?

Here’s one theory: maybe New Jersey is actually doing a better job with road upkeep.

I know, it sounds like a stretch. But what if it’s true? What if the road crews have been more proactive, keeping the roads in better shape and staying ahead of the usual wear and tear?

Sure, it’s easy to criticize, especially when decisions from higher up don’t always seem to align with public needs.

But that doesn’t mean the workers in the field don’t deserve credit. The people out there fixing roads every day shouldn’t be lumped in with politics—they’re just doing their job, and doing it well.

So, to the crews out maintaining our highways—thank you. Your hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Or Was It the Weather?

That could be another reason. The winter of 2025 was cold, yes, but what really made a difference was how stable the temperatures were. There weren’t as many of those wild freeze-thaw swings we usually get.

Why does that matter? Because when temperatures bounce up and down, water seeps into cracks, freezes, expands, and eventually breaks up the road surface. That’s pothole paradise. With fewer freeze-thaw cycles, roads hold up a lot better.

Of course, this doesn’t mean potholes are completely gone. If you do spot one, you can still report it directly to the NJDOT by calling 1-800-POTHOLE.

So while it might be unusual to see smoother roads this time of year, we’ll take it. Let’s just hope it’s the start of a new trend.
