Surprise Family's Bold Sign Prompts City to Address Dangerous Road Conditions

A family in Surprise, Arizona, is taking a stand for road safety after numerous accidents near their home. Melissa and Ryan Langohr, residents of the area, have experienced 18 crashes into their backyard wall over the years.

Frustrated by the lack of action from city officials, they decided to put up a large homemade sign that reads, “CITY OF SURPRISE, DO WE HAVE TO DIE? FIX THE ROAD! 18 AND COUNTING.

Their home is located near a sharp bend on West Northwest Ranch Parkway, where drivers often fail to navigate the turn, leading to accidents.

The speed limit drops from 35 mph to 25 mph in this area, but many drivers don’t slow down in time. The Langohrs have shared photos and videos of the aftermath of these crashes, some of which have resulted in vehicles crashing into their home.

Melissa recalls a terrifying incident when a car crashed through their wall, ending up just feet away from their kitchen table, where their children were sitting. The family now suffers from anxiety and fear, unable to feel safe in their own home.

In response to the sign and the media attention it garnered, Surprise city officials have promised to take action. Vice Mayor Jack Hastings acknowledged the issue and expressed his commitment to finding a solution.

While changes may take time due to funding and planning requirements, the Langohrs are hopeful that their efforts will lead to improved safety measures in their neighborhood.
