Tax Relief Alert: IRS Gives Deadline Extension to These 13 States

Most taxpayers must file their taxes by the usual April 15 deadline unless they request an extension or live in one of 13 states where the IRS has granted more time due to recent natural disasters.

On Monday, the IRS announced that all residents of Arkansas and Tennessee now qualify for an extended deadline.

This extension comes in response to the storms, flooding, and tornadoes that struck those states starting April 2.

Taxpayers there now have until November 3, 2025, to file their returns and pay any taxes that were initially due before this new date.

Other regions affected by natural disasters may also be eligible for extra time, according to earlier IRS guidance.

The agency frequently delays deadlines for individuals and businesses in disaster zones due to the disruptions these events cause.

In 2025, residents in parts of 13 states may qualify for such relief. In some cases, like the wildfires in Los Angeles, only specific counties are included.

“The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer whose address of record is in a designated disaster area,” the agency said. “These individuals don’t need to contact the IRS to receive the extension.”

Taxpayers who don’t live in those areas but still need more time can file for an automatic extension, which gives them until October 15 to submit their tax returns. However, any taxes owed must still be paid by the original April 15 deadline.

Here’s a breakdown of the current IRS extensions:
