Tennessee Cities Among Top U.S. Areas with Least Sleep, Study Reveals

A recent study conducted by Smart Asset shed light on the cities across the United States where residents struggle the most to get a good night’s sleep, highlighting the importance of adequate rest for overall health and well-being.

The findings underscored the correlation between insufficient sleep and long-term health issues, as well as an increased risk of accidents, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With an average of 33.8% of adults in the largest U.S. cities reporting inadequate sleep, the study emphasized the potential impact on individuals’ quality of life and financial stability due to healthcare expenses and diminished productivity.

In Tennessee, two cities stood out among the top 50 areas with the least sleep in the nation. Memphis secured the 24th spot, with 36.4% of adults failing to achieve at least seven hours of sleep per night. Meanwhile, Nashville followed closely behind at 46th place, with 34.1% of adults reporting insufficient sleep.

The top 10 cities with the highest percentages of adults getting less than seven hours of sleep per night included:

  1. Honolulu, Hawaii: 42.3%
  2. Norfolk, Virginia: 41.1%
  3. Richmond, Virginia: 41.0%
  4. New Orleans, Louisiana: 39.4%
  5. Detroit, Michigan: 38.9%
  6. Kansas City, Missouri: 38.8%
  7. Huntsville, Alabama: 38.7%
  8. Toledo, Ohio: 38.5%
  9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: 38.4% (tie)
  10. Newark, New Jersey: 38.4% (tie)

Smart Asset’s methodology involved ranking 100 of the largest U.S. cities based on the percentage of adults reporting inadequate sleep, aiming to provide insights into sleep patterns and behaviors across different metropolitan areas.
