An inmate at the Santa Clara County Jail was found dead in his cell over the weekend, sparking an investigation by local authorities.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the man, who was in custody at the Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex, was discovered unresponsive around 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Sheriff’s deputies, along with jail medical staff, immediately attempted to revive the man with life-saving measures. Emergency responders from the San Jose Fire Department arrived shortly after, but the man was pronounced dead at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Authorities have not yet released the man’s identity, though they stated that he was 56 years old. A preliminary investigation has shown no indications of foul play, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
The man had been booked into the jail the day before his death, on Friday, after being arrested for multiple outstanding warrants.
These included charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence, possessing drug paraphernalia, and obstructing law enforcement.
In another incident, an inmate at California State Prison in Lancaster was reportedly killed by another inmate.
The attack occurred on Sunday, and staff at the facility witnessed Kenneth M. Wilson, 30, assaulting Renee A. Rodriguez, 51, in the dayroom.
Officers quickly intervened with non-lethal weapons and chemical agents, but Rodriguez later died from his injuries after being transported to a medical facility. Investigators recovered two improvised weapons at the scene.
