Trump Faces Three Legal Defeats in One Day After Attacking Judges

Donald Trump’s political plans took a hit on Thursday when three separate judges ruled against him in one day. This came just one day after the president criticized judges who were blocking his immigration plans, calling them part of a “judicial insurrection.”

In Washington, a federal judge temporarily blocked a significant part of Trump’s efforts to make changes to voting and election registration rules.

Critics argued that Trump’s executive order requiring voters to provide proof of citizenship before voting exceeded his presidential powers.

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, who wrote a 120-page opinion, stated that regulating federal elections is the responsibility of Congress and the states, not the president. She reminded Trump that he could not bypass Congress in such matters.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco, U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick ruled against Trump’s attempt to withhold federal funds from “sanctuary” cities.

These cities have laws that prevent local officials from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Orrick decided that Trump’s executive order to cut off funding was too vague and violated due process rights under the Fifth Amendment.

The ruling affected not just San Francisco but also 15 other cities and counties, including Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, and New Haven.

In the third ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Landya McCafferty in Concord, New Hampshire, blocked Trump’s plan to cut funding to schools with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

The lawsuit, filed by the National Education Association and the ACLU, argued that the government was violating teachers’ rights to free speech and due process.

The judge criticized the administration for not defining what a DEI program is, and she pointed out that the education department’s actions were discriminatory against certain viewpoints on racism.

Earlier in the week, during an interview with conservative commentator Glenn Beck, Trump agreed with a claim made by Senator Mike Lee.

Lee suggested that judges who insisted on due process for immigrant deportations were essentially undermining what Trump was elected to do. Trump, in support of this view, described the legal challenges as a form of insurrection.
