Xcel Energy has submitted a proposal to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, seeking approval for a $150.7 million rate increase over the next two years.
Under the plan, the utility is asking for an 11.8% increase in electricity rates in 2026—equivalent to about 61 cents per day—and a 7.2% increase in 2027, which would amount to around 36 cents daily.
The proposal also includes a 12.7% increase in natural gas rates for 2026 and a 1.5% hike in 2027.
Mara Ascheman, Xcel’s Regional Vice President of Rates and Regulatory Affairs, explained that the proposed increase would help fund upgrades to the distribution system.
“This is primarily to support investments in strengthening and modernizing the infrastructure, like poles, wires, and pipes—located closest to customers’ homes and businesses,” she said.
The final decision will be made by the Public Service Commission, which will also consider feedback from customers through online comments and public listening sessions.
For customers concerned about rising bills, Xcel Energy is encouraging participation in its energy assistance programs. Additional support is also available through La Crosse County’s Energy Assistance Program.
Kristi Matz, the program coordinator for La Crosse County, emphasized the importance of seeking help early. “Costs are going up, and even if you think you don’t need assistance now, it’s worth checking to see if you qualify before things get overwhelming,” she said.
